    MiAi Law was set up with a clear purpose: to bridge the technology gap for lawyers who can't afford to create custom AI solutions in-house. Our main mission is to deliver cost-effective, high trust research tools and generative AI that empower lawyers to offer efficient, affordable, and high-quality legal services to their clients in a safe, secure, and compliant manner that aligns with Australia's privacy laws.

Acknowledging the unique challenges faced by lawyers in remote or regional areas, where labour and skill shortages are significant, MiAi Law strives to provide these professionals with affordable access to advanced legal research and AI tools.     Our Founders

    Laina Chan
    Founder & CEO
    Driven by a desire to leverage AI for creating 'perfect memory' for herself and harnessing her 30 years of accumulated experience, Laina co-founded Miai Law Pty Ltd with Fred Almeida, her Harvard Business School classmate from 2019. Laina’s vision for Miai Law is to revolutionize legal research with AI, delivering unprecedented efficiency and accuracy.
    Professional Background
    Laina is an award-winning barrister with 20 years of legal practice, complemented by dual qualifications in Pure Mathematics and Law from the University of Sydney. A member of the esteemed 2019 Management Excellence cohort at Harvard Business School, her career is marked by numerous accolades:
    • 2021 Lawyers Weekly Female Barrister of the Year
    • Consistent finalist for the Lawyers Weekly Australian Barrister of the Year since 2019
    • 2023 recognition as one of the Top 100 Women in Construction
    Academic and Authorial Excellence
    A prolific author, Laina’s works are extensively published in peer-reviewed journals. She is:
    • LexisNexis author of the annotated Insurance Contracts Act in the Insurance Law Practice
    • Editorial board member of the LexisNexis Insurance Law Bulletin
    • Co-author of the 2019 Federation Press publication of Contract and the Australian Consumer Law
    Her publications are part of the curriculum at many Australian universities, and she frequently peer-reviews submissions for leading journals. Additionally, Laina shares her expertise as a guest lecturer for the University of Melbourne’s Masters of Construction Law program.
    Early Career and Legal Research
    Laina began her legal journey as a researcher for the Honourable Justice Clarke at the New South Wales Court of Appeal and worked with the Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG. Her foundational training in legal research was honed at the New South Wales Supreme Court library, mastering traditional research methodologies. Over the years, she has witnessed the evolution of legal research tools, transitioning from laborious manual processes to the rapid, AI-driven capabilities of today. What once took a week in 1994 can now be accomplished in seconds with Miai Law’s cutting-edge AI research tools.

    Fred Almeida
    Founder & Chief Architect
    Fred Almeida is an expert in AI and Robotics, based in Tokyo who describes himself as a "hacker" given his exceptional skills in complex AI technology. He is a pioneering figure with a far-reaching impact on the tech industry. Fred's role at Ascent Robotics as Founder was even featured in the 2018 Australian Financial Review article entitled "Why Japan Trumps Silicon Valley for Some Tech Whizzes." Fred was instrumental in developing deep learning technologies for autonomous driving in Japan, competing with global giants like DeepMind, Waymo, and Uber. This work earned him a prestigious Japanese award.
    Fred has multiple patents and the ones relevant to Miai Law are:
    • JP-2019098949-A - Learning method, learning device and learning program;
    • WO-2023068252-A1 - Target digital twin model generation system, control system for robot, virtual shop generation system, target digital twin model generation method, control method for robot, and virtual shop generation method; and
    • JP-2020135672- AI inference of flow.
    Fred is also a serial entrepreneur. His journey as a founder includes creating Alyc.ai, where he developed sophisticated holographic AI systems. He has served as an Advisory Board member at the Sunday Group, collaborated with leading academics in blockchain, cryptography, cybersecurity, internet technology, and AI to develop a ground breaking blockchain initiative at Mobby, and was the driving force at Neuri Pte Ltd as CEO and Board member.
    More recently Fred has been instrumental in the development of Medora AI Inc., a San Fr-based hybrid company revolutionising healthcare with cutting-edge AI technologies. There he employs computer vision, large language models, and machine learning to offer personalised medical advice and enhance patient understanding of their health data. This AI system is enriched with specialised clinical tests tailored to each patient, introducing foundation models that learn from patient data over time, simplifying the healthcare journey, and making medical advice more accessible and comprehensible.
    Mi.Ai Law, a name inspired by the Japanese term "miai," means arranged marriage, symbolises the innovative union of law and technology as well as the collaboration between Australia and Japan. As Co-Founder and Chief Architect at Mi.Ai Law, he is harnessing his expertise to develop an advanced legal research tool that aims to deliver high-trust outputs, significantly enhancing access to justice and efficiency in legal research and practice. Leveraging his “hacker” skills, Mi.Ai Law will deliver a perfect memory system for each subscriber in the future, further enhancing the legal profession.

    Our Advisory Board

    Ashley Brinson

    Ashley has over three decades of business leadership spanning America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Ashley is the Director of “Project Green Polysilicon”, a multi-billion dollar solar semiconductor facility at the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct. The investment is led by Private Energy Partners, the in-house project developers for Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners. Ashley is the Director of Brinson and Associates strategy consultancy, and he is Director of Greener Technologies Pty Ltd, the developer of Solarobotix.
    From 2014-2020, Ashley was the CEO of The Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering, a technology think tank at the University of Sydney. Prior to then, as the Solar Energy Alliances Manager for the Dow Corning Corporation, Ashley’s team developed solar panel manufacturing robots and field construction robots. Ashley is an inventor of five patent families related to silicon, and he designed, constructed and managed major silicon facilities in the U.S, Europe, and Asia based on these technologies including a multi-billion dollar “mega-project” facility in China.
    Ashley holds a BChE from Georgia Tech, an MBA from Rutgers University, and a Juris Doctor from Sydney University Law School. Ashley is a Fellow of Engineers Australia, a Fellow of IChemE, a lawyer of the Supreme Court of NSW, and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

    Roxane Desmicht

    Roxane Desmicht is a recognised thought leader in supply chain management and digital transformation, known for her contributions as a panelist and presenter at international conferences. With over 20 years of experience in the high-tech and semiconductor industries, her versatile expertise spans product development, project management, account management, and supply chain.
    In recent years, Roxane has been at the forefront of driving digital transformation in supply chain and operations. She has collaborated with the Singapore Economic Development Board and TUV Süd to test and refine the Singapore Smart Industry Readiness Index.
    Currently, she is an adjunct professor of supply chain at EMLyon Business School and a professional coach. She also serves on the Industrial Advisory Board of the National University of Singapore's Industrial Engineering faculty.
    Roxane's academic achievements exemplify her dedication and expertise. She holds a degree in Physics from the Ecole de Physique et Chimie Industrielles together with a master's degree in Material Science, and an Executive MBA from the China Europe International Business School.
    Throughout her career, Roxane has demonstrated a relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation. Her multifaceted experience and deep industry knowledge make her an invaluable asset to any advisory board. Roxane's comprehensive understanding of supply chain dynamics, coupled with her experience in digital transformation and academic contributions, provides a unique and holistic perspective that will undoubtedly contribute to the success and growth of the startup.

    David Ioannidis

    David Ioannidis is a seasoned Portfolio Manager at Rolling Capital Management, with a strong background in financial markets and a keen interest in nurturing early-stage companies. With a successful career spanning over three decades, David brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table.
    David's professional journey began in Investment Banking, where he specialized in trading Fixed Income markets at Citi and later at JP Morgan. During his decade plus tenure at JP Morgan, David held various key positions, including leading the Fixed Income Trading division in Australia. He was a member of both the Global Rates Management Committee and the Local Executive Committee, showcasing his strategic leadership skills.
    In addition to his role at JP Morgan, David actively contributed to the financial services industry, serving on the Australian Financial Markets Association Governance Committee and as a Director at Yieldbroker (now Tradeweb Australia). His dedication and insights were further recognized during his tenure as Chairman of the Board at Yieldbroker, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the organization's trajectory.
    In his post-banking career, David has redirected his focus towards partnering with founders to foster the growth of early-stage ventures across diverse sectors. His hands-on approach and strategic guidance have proven invaluable in helping budding entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of building and scaling their businesses.

    Jonathon P Karelse

    Jonathon is the award-winning CEO of North Find Management and a global leader in Sales & Operations Planning, governance, and operations management. He has managed process improvement and organizational change for companies as diverse as Staples, Heineken, Dell Technologies, Microsoft and STEMCELL Biotechnologies.
    His board experience spans the healthcare, industrial and consumer packaged goods industries, in addition to his advisory work with the International Journal of Applied Forecasting.
    Jonathon's best-selling book Histories of the Future was published in 2021 by Forbes Books and was followed by a podcast on demand planning hosted by Forbes Radio.
    Jonathon studied Economics at the University of Western Ontario before moving to the University of British Columbia to study law. He is a graduate of the MIT Sloan School of Management, a member of the 2019 Management Excellence cohort at Harvard Business School, and a member of the Harvard Business Review’s Advisory Council.

    Dr Brydon Wang

    Dr Brydon Wang is an author, lawyer and scholar researching at the confluence of law, technology and design governance of the city. Brydon is dually qualified in law and architecture and practised as a technology and construction lawyer with a global top-tier law firm. He currently teaches in the law school at the Queensland University of Technology. Brydon's research focuses on how we can regulate to increase the perceived trustworthiness of decision-makers. In doing so, his research addresses vulnerability -- particularly vulnerability arising from informational asymmetry.
    Brydon is passionate about regulating to enhance trustworthiness in the design and deployment of automated decision-making systems in cities (BIM, Digital Twins). While at the University of Queensland, Brydon taught Responsible Data Science in the Master of Data Science course. His PhD thesis, 'The Role of Trustworthiness in Automated Decision-making Systems and the Law' was awarded the 2022 Faculty of Business and Law Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award.
